Ideas for General Intercessions

These ideas are designed to be starting points for the prayers of a particular community of faith.

Joe Milner

For the Church: that while surrounded by the darkness of selfishness, jealousy, and greed, we may live as children of the light and show God’s love, patience, and compassion to others

For the grace of attentiveness: that we may be aware of the signs of the times and recognize God’s action and presence in our lives

For alertness: that the Spirit will shake us from complacency and help us to actively search for God in our lives each day

For openness: that we may make room in our hearts for God to enter more fully into our lives during this Advent season through listening, reflecting and silent watchfulness

For all Christians: that we may more and more put on the mind and heart of Christ and be a source of light and hope for all who are searching for meaning and truth

For the gift of peace: that God will teach the hearts of all the human family so that swords may be turned into plowshares and the resources for war into resources for healing and development

For a spirit of readiness: that God will awaken us from inattention and slothfulness so that we can be vigilant in our words and deeds, and prepared for Christ’s advent into our lives each day

For leaders of nations: that their hearts may be awakened by God so that people may be trained for jobs, receive healthcare for their illness, and food for their hunger

For a spirit of expectation: that we may live with the awareness that our salvation is drawing close and God’s reign is being manifest through hearts that are just and lives that are poured out in love

For all who await God's blessings, particularly for those who are pregnant, for those who are separated from family or homeland, for members of the military awaiting to return home, and for those who are facing death: that God’s comforting and strengthening love will sustain them

For all children: that they may recognize all the blessings that are theirs and that their hearts may not be lost in the things that they want to get

For all who are busy and hurried: that as they wait to get things done, they may recognize the gift that each moment is and be aware of the opportunity in each encounter with others

For all who are working for peace, particularly in Syria, and Iraq: that God will guide and inspire their work and open new doors for peace and cooperation

For all who are ill, particularly those who are awaiting surgery: that God’s healing love will sustain and comfort them

For all who are returning home this weekend: that God will keep them safe and help them to arrive without delay

For the homeless and the homebound: that they may experience love and acceptance through our concern and outreach

For all who are searching for jobs: that God will open new doors and new opportunities for them to use their gifts and support their families
