Ideas for General Intercessions

These ideas are designed to be starting points for the prayers of a particular community of faith.

Joe Milner

1. For the Church: that we may be awake to life each day, roused from sleep-waking through life, and freed from avoidance of issues

2. For God’s saving action: that God will rend the heavens and bring justice to the earth, freedom for all who are unjustly held or caught in addictions, and hope to those who feel defeated

3. For patience during this Advent season for each of us: that we may discover God's word in every sound that touches our ears, God's touch in every human embrace, and God's love in every gesture of self-sacrifice among us

4. For greater attentiveness: that our minds and hearts may be focused upon the tasks we do, the people we love, and the God whom we serve today

5. For greater awareness: that the Spirit will guide us to reflection and recognition of all the thoughts, feelings, hopes, and dreams that are planted deep within our hearts

6. For those who have wandered from their relationship with God: that the memories and hopes of this season will open a doorway to God who loves them

7. For world leaders: that they may take the long view of human history and choose to protect and promote life and peace for all people rather than their reputation

8. For all who are suffering from violence, famine, persecution, or neglect: that God will destroy the bonds that hold them and open the doors of mercy and compassion for them

9. For all who are awaiting the birth of a child: that God will bless these expectant parents, fill their hearts with love and acceptance, and help their children to grow and mature

10. For all refugees, immigrants, and displaced persons who are awaiting a new home or a return to their home: that God will give them patience and guide lawmakers in developing policies to address the issues that they face

11. For all who are being persecuted for their religious or political beliefs: that God will give them courage and relieve their suffering

12. For all who are ill: that God will heal the sick and give strength to those who care for them

13. For all who must wait: that God will strengthen and comfort all who are waiting with the sick, those awaiting a diagnosis, those separated from loved ones, and those who are held unjustly

14. For healing of our nation: that the Spirit will open avenues for peaceful discourse and help leaders to seek the common good

15. For an end to fighting and warfare: that God will break through the plans and schemes of military leaders and open hearts to work together to save lives and provide food to those who need it
