First Reading
Genesis 1:1 - 2:2
1. All creation started with a word from God. Compare the beginning of Genesis with the beginning of John’s Gospel. Was Jesus present at the beginning?
2. Discuss Dianne Bergant, CSA’s statement: “The vigil readings recount our journey from darkness into light, from the chaotic waters of creation to the saving waters of baptism.”
Second Reading
Romans 6: 3-11
1. Compare the death and resurrection of Jesus with baptism and new life of a Christian.
2. What is the good news in this reading? Is it that “our old self was crucified with him”? Or that we are “living for God in Christ Jesus”? Or is it both?
Gospel
Matthew 28:1-10
1. “Suddenly Jesus met them and said, ‘Greetings!’ And they came to him, took hold of his feet, and worshipped him.” Describe what you think Mary Magdalen and the other Mary (probably the mother of James) must have been feeling and thinking. Why do you think they were the first people to whom Jesus announced his resurrection, and the first to be commissioned to spread the word to others?
2. What are the manifestations of divine power in this gospel account of the resurrection?
What do those manifestations say to you?
